Abstract

The taxonomic position of the cosmopolitan hybotid genus Drapetis Meigen, 1822 is discussed in relation to its former placement in the Empididae. Biological data for adults and larvae of the genus are reviewed. Drapetis hiatus, a new Afrotropical species of the nominate subgenus, is descriptionbed and illustrated from Merrivale (Natal, South Africa). A new key to the three known Afrotropical species of Drapetis sensu stricto is provided.
