Abstract

Touchstone #5 recognises that much of current educational practice in Western culture is anti-environmental. Wild Pedagogies acknowledges that without learning to understand ourselves, what it means to be human, and the importance of the more-than-human world, current educational practice will not change the human/ nature relationship or even limit the destruction of the planet's ecosystems (Jickling et al., 2018). This workshop was built on Fiona’s [My] PhD thesis, critically examining the popular notion that learning and growth in outdoor education requires individuals to step outside their ‘comfort zones’. Bridget’s experience as a woman in the field of outdoor education supports my findings, which encourage a shift away from outdoor practices that celebrate dominant hegemonic relationships, such as conquering nature and masculine bravery in the face of adversity, in favour of Wild Pedagogies that are inclusive and relational.
