Abstract
This chapter begins by introducing and contextualising the RE-searchers Approach to Religious Education (RE) in primary schools (5–11 year olds) as a methodologically- and hermeneutically-orientated pedagogical framework. The chapter next identifies assessment and progression as previously underexplored dimensions of the approach and establishes the need for greater attention to be paid to these issues. To this end, the chapter revisits earlier efforts to conceptualise assessment and progression within the RE-searchers Approach, highlighting formative strategies such as Self- and Method-Assessment, Dialogic Marking, and Self-Assessment Profiling. Next the chapter identifies a (digital) badge-based assessment scheme called ‘The RE-searchers Club: The Badge Guide’ as the strategy with the most potential for recognising and rewarding pupil engagement, competence and progression. Finally, the chapter discusses the theoretical foundations, practical applications and future possibilities of this scheme.
