Abstract
Cerebral and/or Cortical Vision Impairment (CVI) is a leading cause of childhood vision impairment. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of multidisciplinary habilitation at improving functional vision for adolescents with CVI. We retrospectively analysed 73 annual assessments from 24 students (aged between 9 and 25 years) over five years at a UK specialist school and college. Predictor variables, including visual acuity and co-occurring conditions, were also recorded. A mixed effects model was used for analysis. Assessment and interventions were informed by the CVI Range framework and delivered by a multidisciplinary team. Functional vision improved significantly over time, with a linear increase of 0.78 per year on a scale from 0 to 10. Significant differences were noted between individuals, influenced by acuity, nystagmus, and time. Significant improvements in functional vision are possible beyond sensitive periods of neuroplasticity. Further research is needed to identify reliable predictors of improvement in CVI.
