Marjon, is a values-led community that opens opportunities for all
We believe that every single person has the potential to change the world, and since 1838, we’ve been helping them to do it. We believe in excellence, not elitism. We believe in personal development and intellectual discovery. We believe in successful long-term careers for all.
Students here build a long term career through a balanced approach to learning which includes intellectual curiosity and knowledge, practical experience and focused personal development. This balanced approach means our students achieve success at university and in future work environments.
We do it through career focussed courses which are more than a degree; and are geared towards a long term career. We have a tutorial approach for accelerated personal development. There is one campus for an incredible student experience in a spectacular location for space and inspiration. Marjon offers a place to belong with inspirational lecturers and outstanding support from a community of likeminded people.
Our work:
Exercise as medicine
As part of a major research project working with Macmillan we run a holistic physical activity clinic for cancer patients. This improves their quality of life, working on not just the physical effects of cancer, but the familial and social aspects too. The resulting research has been recognised internationally as being at the frontier of this area of exercise as medicine.
Community sports
Our world-class sports facilities are ranked as 4th best in the UK and are a hub for community sports development. We attract not only elite medal-winning athletes, but also thousands of members of the local community who are inspired to get active by our coaches, community and enthusiastic teams. Students on our sport and physical activity programmes leave us with hundreds of hours of hands-on coaching experience.
Teaching Excellence since 1838
We have always believed that outstanding teaching transforms lives. We were the UK’s first teacher training institution and our first Principal invented the school inspection system now known as Ofsted. In the 21st Century, our innovative partnership approach delivers graduates held in such high esteem that almost two-thirds of newly qualified teachers in Plymouth are Marjon graduates, and we perform above sector on almost every level in the NQT survey.
