Abstract

This chapter explores how noticing, both outdoors and in digital spaces, can support the wellbeing of neurodiverse young people, highlighting how Minecraft and conservation activities invite attention to self, others, and the more-than-human world. While equity is increasingly emphasised in outdoor learning, neurodivergence remains underrepresented, despite an estimated 20% of the UK population being neurodivergent. Creative, playful, and hopeful approaches are urgently needed to engage young people in educational and environmental issues. Minecraft provides a powerful visual and interactive tool through which participants can envision sustainable futures, challenge conventional notions of what is ‘real,’ and express their emotions and values. Drawing on tales from the Bridging Worlds educational research project, this chapter highlights how combining real-world conservation with digital creativity fosters inclusion, teamwork, and self-expression, and demonstrates how playful, nature-based, and imaginative methods can inform research, policy, and practice to support wellbeing and sustainable coexistence.
